Dr. Jennifer Buchanan, DDS -
I recently had the opportunity to visit with Dr. Jennifer Buchanan and find out what she recommends when dealing with her patients’ orthodontic problems. I asked her the following questions:
Dr. Shannon: When is the best time to have a child undergo an orthodontic evaluation if the child’s general dentist has some concerns about how the patient’s teeth are positioned?
Dr. Buchanan: The American Association of Orthodontics recommends an evaluation by 7 years of age. However, I usually tell my referring dentists that the patient should be seen whenever the dentist has a concern, regardless of age.
Dr. Shannon: What do you find is the most common orthodontic problem you see in your patients?
Dr. Buchanan: Well, we see all kinds of problems, as you can imagine. But I would have to say the most common have to do with issues of teeth overcrowding as well as the general relationship of the upper and lower jaws.
Dr. Shannon: How important is it that your patients have regular check-ups and cleanings while in treatment? Do you recommend check-ups on a particular schedule? Do you feel that sealants on the back teeth are beneficial?
Dr. Buchanan: Very important! We recommend check-ups every 6 months and cleanings every 3-6 months, depending on how good a job the patients are doing with their home care. We actually give a monetary reward to each patient who brings us a receipt from the general dentist showing that a check-up and cleaning have been done on time. As for sealants, Oh yes, definitely! We like it when we see sealants on those back teeth because we know how much it helps to prevent cavities.
Dr. Shannon: Do you have any additional advice to give parents concerning their children’s teeth?
Dr. Buchanan: I would just encourage them to visit the orthodontist if their dentist feels it would help. There have been many technological advances in our field that make treatment much easier for patients and shorten the time in treatment for many of them. Orthodontic correction is worthwhile at any age; in fact about 30% of our patients are adults.
A resident of McKinney, Dr. Buchanan has been practicing orthodontics here for several years, providing care to children and adults alike. Her office is located at 2600 Eldorado Parkway, Suite 100. She can be reached at (972)542-4412.
