The staff of Shannon DentalCare, in conjunction with the American Dental Association, has again been privileged to participate in Children’s Dental Health Month with presentations at our local schools and by offering complimentary dental care at the annual “Give Kids A Smile” event.
Dr. Tim Shannon, along with our hygienist, Rene, and dental assistant, Shelly, gave presentations to over 1,000 elementary school students at different schools in McKinney during February 2005. They spoke on the importance of having regular dental check-ups and maintaining good home oral hygiene habits. The children were treated to a video of Dudley the Dinosaur’s first visit to the dentist. They were shown the proper way to brush and clean their teeth. The importance of eating healthy foods was also stressed, along with making good snack choices. Emphasis was placed on the value of prevention to avoid getting cavities. Twice yearly check-ups and the use of dental sealants help to meet this goal. Each child received a new toothbrush, along with toothpaste samples and instructional materials, at the end of each presentation.

Dr. Shannon and Shelly also participated at the annual “Give Kids A Smile” event held at the Collin County Community College Dental Hygiene School the last weekend in January 2005. Each year members of the North Texas Dental Society, their staff, the students of CCCC Dental Hygiene program, and other volunteers provide complimentary dental care to children in need. These children are selected by their school nurses. This year the school districts of Allen, Frisco, and McKinney recommended the names of two hundred students for treatment. These children received the equivalent of more than $100,000 worth of donated care during the two days of the event. We thank Proctor and Gamble (Crest products), Ivoclar-Vivadent, and Schein Dental Supply for their generous support through the donation of needed materials and supplies.
Community events such as these bring needed attention to our children while stressing the importance of developing good health habits early in life. Another service we are providing is the placement of complimentary sealants on the four first permanent molars of each new child patient seen in our practice during the months of January through March. Such preventive dental care helps to avoid problems later. Shannon DentalCare is pleased to be able to participate in Children’s Dental Health Month.
